Thanks. I found similar results. I did install mailformplus and try it. I was hoping I could use the standard mailform so that our content managers could create their own forms easily. But I'm finding nothing in TYPO3 is easy ! Plus I found strange rendering problems with FireFox.
Looks like I'll be using MailFormPlus.

There does not appear to be to many hints I'm afraid.

I would recommend using something like th_mailformplus instead.

On a mailform, when adding a radio button, I get both the label and the legend. I don't want a legend. Does anyone know how to suppress the display of the legend?
